Lines on Banner/Icon

I’m working with photoshop elements 4.0

We are going from > or .

**How I got the coloring of the icon is at the bottom of the tutorial. =]

Tutorial: Lines on Banner/Icon:
This is a finishing technique. So make sure you banner/icon is complete.

My friend recently taught me how to do this, so I thought I would make my own little tutorial on this. =]

1- Get your finished icon/banner. I’m going to be working on an icon.

2- Make a new document: 3x3, transparent. Zoom in. With a pencil tool, make your pattern.
Example: http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j195/xiggy89x/Tutorials/2-1.gif

3- Go to edit>define pattern> (name it whatever you want). Example: http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j195/xiggy89x/Tutorials/3-1.gif

4- Go back to your finished icon. Now this step can vary. I duplicate my icon first. Then add the pattern. I do this so I can erase away the parts on the face, ect…You don’t need to do that, but I prefer it. Okay its time to add the pattern. Go to fill layer. Make sure these are your settings:
a. Use: pattern
b. Custom pattern (pick the one we just made)
c. Mode: soft light
d. Opacity: 55% (you can change this around, depending on how strong you want the pattern to be)
e. Transparency is checked.
Example: http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j195/xiggy89x/Tutorials/4-1.gif

5- This is where you can erase the area’s covering the face, ect.. if you want. I decided to do this.

6-And your done. Merge everything. And save.

The icon coloring:
This was an after thought, but this is in case you want to know how I got that particular coloring on my icon. I’m not going into super detail here. Its pretty much just playing around with fill layers:

1- I’m working with this picture: picture
2- I created new layer and filled it with: 694a6f
3- I set the blend mode to saturation 100%.
4- I merged the layers. Resized it and dragged it onto a new 100x100 document.
5- Play around with the sharpening and contrast. And voila you get:
