first tutorial

This tutorial will teach you how to transform a light and dull picture into a nicer looking picture with more contrast. Click the link below to view the tutorial!

Program: Photoshop CS3
Difficulty: Easy
Translatable: Involves selective colouring, so I don't think so?

1. First prep your picture. Sharpen, crop or resize to your liking.

2. Duplicate your layer and set it to softlight.
Depending on your picture's natural set of lighting you may have to set the opacity lower, I set mine to 41%.

3. Create a new layer, fill it with #c890b9 and set it to colour burn. Play around with the opacity until you get something like the picture below. I set mine to 17%.

4. Create another new layer, fill it with #121c46 and set it to exclusion. You generally want a light blue exclusion effect, I set mine to 18%.

5. Click your background layer, duplicate it and drag it all the way to the top. Desaturate it (Image>> Adjustments >> Desaturate) and set it to softlight 100%.
You could always stop here if you like the subtle effect, but I went on to selective colouring.

6. Create a new selective colouring layer (Image >> Adjustments >> Selective Colouring). Depending on the lighting and colouring of your picture, you'll need to play around but these were my settings:

Reds:
-4 -8 -4 +47
Yellows:
+90 +83 -86 -7
Whites:
+22 +86 +100 -36
Neutrals:
+13 -3 +29 0

7. Add any text, textures, brushes, etc. And you're done! :)

This is the result:
