Coloring tutorial (Emily Browning)
This is my second tutorial, and we'll be going from
to
*Made in GIMP and can be easily translated to other programs.
*only 7 steps
1. Of course, the first thing is to make your base. I started with this picture of Emily Browning, cropped, resized, and sharpened a little. (I prefer to sharpen just a little at first to make the picture clearer...this keeps you from over sharpening, but you can always sharpen more at the end if necessary)
2. Make a new layer and fill with a dark red ~ I used 360f07 ~ and set to exclusion (screen, screen, subtract in GIMP) at 100% opacity.
3. Another new layer and fill with brown ~ I used a96e34 ~ and set to softlight at about 40% opacity. Merge all your layers now.
4. Now that you have one layer, duplicate it and set to softlight somewhere around 40-50% opacity.
5. Take your dark red color from before and set to exclusion once again, but at 30% opacity this time. This way is just makes the icon a little more blue.
6. Make another new layer and fill with a dark blue ~ I used 040422 ~ and set to exclusion 20% opacity. Merge all your layers again.
7. Now go to color balance, and we're just gonna change a little bit:
Midtones: -10, 0, 0
Shadows: 10, 0, -6
Highlights: don't change - - -
*you can stop here if you'd like, or add some text or brushes at this point
For my icon I chose to add a grey grunge brush and set it to multiply at about 80% opacity
There you go! You can see the rest of the icons I made with this coloring in this post.
*As always, if you have any questions please ask!
*Comments are appreciated, I'd love feedback and I like to see what you guys can come up with =)
