- Open your picture and crop it duplicate it set it to screen [ dependes in your icon ] and then sharpen the base layer ..

-I wanted to gave the icon a little red color so using Curves:
Red: O:163. I:136

-then wanted to add a cyan/blue coloring I used Channel Mixer:
Red:+100, -5, -16, 0
Green:0, +100, 0, 0
Blue:0, 0, +100, 0

- the icon lost it contrast and got a little dark .. I used Brightness/Contrast:
B:+11, C:+20 .. depends in your icon ..

-then the last step Hue/Saturation :
Master: S: +14 ..
Reds: S:+10 ..
Yellows: S:+14 ..
Greens: S:12 ..
Cyans: S:+20 ..
Blues: +15 ..
Magentas: S:+15 ..

and do your magic ..
