This is a tutorial using textures and layer blending modes - to go from this
(Base by to this

First of all, desaturate your base until it looks like this -

Then, add this texture (I don't remember who made it, sorry)
and set to overlay.
Then copy your background and set it to soft light.
Take this texture (again, I *fail* at remembering who made what - however, all my icon bases and texture credits can be found in the links on the Userinfo of my community
dyssocialgrafix - don't worry, no need to join up or anything to see what's inside. :) )
and set to Overlay.
Add this texture

and set to Soft Light.
Then add this texture

and set to Screen.
You should now have 5 layers - Background (desaturated base), Texture 1 on overlay, Background copy set to soft light, Texture 2 on overlay, texture 3 on soft light and texture 4 on screen.
I then used the Meteorit font on Regular, Sharp, 14 pt to add the text (selecting the top part of the text to make it black and the bottom to make it white). Then I opened the Character palette and selected the blank spaces between the first two lines, playing around with the leading until it was right - in this case, 16 px on the first two lines and 13 px on the last line. Of course, this depends on the font you'll be using.)
I then tried to stroke the text for effect, but it looked terrible so I went without it - however, for purely aesthetic reasons and to make the text more legible, it's better to stroke the text of your icon in either black or white (but NOT any other colour) to make it more visible. However, this only works when your text is all one colour.
Finally, as a finishing touch, I merged all the layers, selected all of the resulting icon, and stroked it in black, set to Center.
That's it!
