My first tutorial! Eric Delko

Today we're going to go from this:

To this:

Program Used: Photoshop CS
Involves: Curves, Color Balance
Translatable? I think so

1 - Crop your image
Note: I like to sharpen after I adjust the color, which is step 6 in this tutorial. If you'd prefer to sharpen before you do any screen/color layers, be my guest, and you can ignore step 6

2 - duplicate base, set to screen 100% opacity
Note: This will depend on how dark your image is. I recommend only duplicating it once and setting it to screen, then adding more screen layers or adjusting the opacity of this one if necessary after step 5.

3- new curves layer

No RGB

RED:
136, 108
193, 184

GREEN:
140, 120
197, 181

BLUE:
123, 147

4- New color balance layer (preserve luminosity UNCHECKED!)
Midtones: -31, +11, +4

5- New curves layer

RGB:
106, 141

6- Select your screen layer and go to Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen. If it's too grainy, go to Edit > Fade Sharpen... and select a lower opacity.

And you're done!

If the image is too light for your taste, add a new curves layer and make a point in the RGB field that is on the lower right side- something like 133, 94- or a line that looks like that. You can always adjust the opacity of the screen layer instead, but I find that an extra curve layer is better for keeping the color adjustments.

This tutorial works well for icons with too much yellow in them, but will not necessarily improve icons with WAYYYY too much yellow in them.

It also will not work well for icons with a very bluish tint to them. Some bluish tint is fine, but this tutorial tends to make already very-bluish tints VERY-bluish. If that's the end result you want, then don't let me hold you back.
