* colour balance and fade sharpen
1. crop your base as needed.
2. sharpen base, then fade sharpen to 30%
3. duplicate base, set to exclusion 28%
4. new adjustment layer >> hue/saturation: set saturation to +20
5. new adjustment layer >> colour balance: midtones, -12, -20, +28
6. flatten image, duplicate layer, set to screen 100%
7. make a new layer, fill with medium grey #969696 and set to multiply 24%
8. flatten image, duplicate layer, set to screen 38% (can be adjusted lower/higher depending on the brightness and/or number of neutral colours of your original image)
** and if you don't like how light it is, a soft light layer of black at an opacity of 20 - 40% will take care of that.
that's it! i wanted to make a simple, short tutorial with neat results (:
here are the icons with a soft light layer so you can see the (very slight) difference.

and any comments/questions are welcome. results would be nice :D
