My first tut for black & white images.
I think this is translatable to most programs.
Bigger examples under the cut.
Take your base, don't resize. DONT.
My image is of Kristen Stewart. Much thanks to www.kris-stewart.org

1. New fill layer #ffffff set to hue
2. New gradient map layer black and white.
3. Copy merge a new layer (on photoshop the command is ctrl+alt+shift+e)
4. Filter>Other>High Pass
Set to about 10.0
Set layer to softlight.
5. Copy merge a new layer, same as step 3.
6. Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blue
Set to about 3 or whatever suits your image
Set this layer to soft light 25%
I understand that you might just look at it and think "urr I could have done with with the desaturate key" but I think it gives such a better effect to do it this way.

Anyway, the final step I did was add a texture on top.The texture which I used was THIS one from HERE, with much thanks to Yawee on deviantart. Set it to multiply.
And finally, I got:
