I bring a tutorial.
This is my first time writing a tutorial. Today we will be making this icon:

Warning: This is graphic intensive.
This was made with Photoshop CS, although I'm completely positive it'd
work in Photoshop 7, because I only just got CS and don't know all the
new functions.
First we start out with a lovely cap (I
don't remember where from... sorry!) of the siblings from A Series of Unfortunate Events.
I cropped and resized it.

The next two steps:
1) Filter-->Sharpen.
2) Adjustments-->Levels

Now your icon should look like this:

Next I used a lovely gradient by
crumblingwalls, on
overlay with 74% opacity.
</lj>
Now that looks a little overbright, so I added the good ol' dark blue
(#404264) exclusion layer at 84%

Now the original image looks a little washed out, so I duplicated the
original layer and set it to soft light at 65%. Now your icon should
look like this:

It's a nice and subtle coloring but I like it. I looked at it a bit and
decided it was still kind of boring, so I added a brush soft light, on
100%(I credit all the places I download brushes from on my icon journal
but I've no idea where each individual one comes from. If anyone knows
please tell me so I can credit!). The color I picked from a random spot
in the sky on the image using the eyedropper tool, and it happened to
be #D1C4A2.

Then I added yet another brush, an old paper one this time, (again, if
anyone knows where it's from please tell me), using Multiply at 100%,
with the color #ECDEB8,

All these effects are really subtle but it's the little things that
makes an icon pretty!
Now for text. Since there wasn't a lot of space I added the word FAMILY
in 8 pt font, Times New Roman, with100 spacing between letters, and in
color #FCF6E0 on the upper left corner.

Now I decided that was a tad plain, so I added an outer glow effect on
the text layer blending in black (#000000). The settings look like this.

Now the icon looks like this.

Now to add some border. I used this border icon at #C0C0C0, on
Multiply, to create a black smoky effect.

And there we have it. The final product:
This icon is also for the taking. Please credit to
23carat if you'd like to use it!
And I'm sorry I double posted. I thought I deleted the other one. >.>
</lj>
</lj>
I hope that was clear. :)
