Rainbow Effect

My first icon tutorial . I'm not sure how effective this is going to be on other images. It just seemed right for what I was doing, and I'm sure it's nothing new anyway. So here goes everything. For PS by the way.
We're going to make this:

Alright, first thing first open Photoshop.
I used this image from here.
Use Image size to reduce the wallpaper to 50% and then crop to 100x100.
You should now have something like this

Now rotate it 90 degrees counter-clockwise

Duplicate this layer.
Go to filter>blur>gaussian blur and use it at Radius: 5.0px
Reduce the opacity to 50%

New layer.
I used a gradient next. I can't remember where from though. Tell me if you know

and set it to overlay 100% just to give the shoe extra sparkle

New layer.
This step isn't really required, it's even sort of unnoticeable, but I'm using it anyway. I used this brush (btw again please tell me where this is from and remind me to record resources)

in #DB1D0F (hint: open the above image and go to edit>define brush), then set to overlay

New layer.
Use this preset photoshop pattern:

and set it to Color Burn at 10% opacity.

New layer.
Fill this with #742D5F. Next we need to get out this eraser, set it to something like 15px diameter and 0 hardness. Now erase away the purple over the shoe like so (hint: reduce the opacity of this layer while erasing so you know you're hitting the right area)

It doesn't need to be perfect as you can see.
Set this layer to screen.

Create a new layer.
Choose the preset Color Harmonies 1 gradients and pick the first one. Now you need to select Layer 7 (the purple one) on the layer palette and control-click on it to select only the opague areas of this layer.
Drag the gradient from bottom left to top right.

Set to color. Hey-presto, the image is rainbow except for the shoe which is still red .

Now type 'home in Times New Roman size 48. The colour doesn't matter, because you're going to use the control-click thing again to make gradient text.

Flip it 180 degrees, move it to the top and set to Color Burn.

New type layer, type 'no place like' in #D61509, set to Multiply and move under the 'home' text.

You might notice that the word 'like' is slightly hard to read. No problem there. Get your paws on the dodge tool, select the first layer on your layer palette and dodge under the word to your hearts content until you're satisfied you can see it.

New layer.
I used this brush

again from somewhere I don't know *slaps pinching fingers* in #FFFFFF and set opacity to 50%.

Finally I just rimmed it with a nice clean one pixel #FFFFFF border at 100% opacity.

Et *drum roll* viola, un tres bonne er icon.

If you've followed the brick road correctly and haven't lost your footing or been eaten by a lion filled with a burst of courage, the Wizard of Oz will have granted you a new icon. Bon appetit!
