Whee...Tutorial :)
Of course, I'm gonna make a Charlie/Claire Icon...cos Lost owns your socks, and you know it does!
Let's make this icon using Photoshop 7:

Open the picture you want to use. In this case, I used this Picture:

Do, Auto Contrast (Ctrl+Shift+Alt+L), and then Auto Levels (Ctrl+Shift+L) It should look something like this:

Now, you want to take your cropping tool, and set it to 100px by 75 px. crop the image the way you want. I got this:

Next, again do the Auto Levels, and Auto Contrast just to be safe. Then you want to Go Filter >> Sharpen.

Next, create a new 100x100px document. Copy and past the image you just created. It should go to the middle of the icon. (Disreguard the stroke I have on this, I'm just showing you the size of the icon.)

Now, you want to grab some brushes. Any that you want. I dunno where I got these, it was off of a website. I have the links over in the Links section at http://www.kryssibug.com. You want to select the background layer of the document you have open, and just apply the brushes to get the grungy effect. MAKE SURE YOU ARE ROTATING COLORS! Set your brushes to 30% opacity. Do *not* use black or white for these brushes.

Now, ensure that you have the background layer selected, and hit Ctrl+U. It'll bring up the Hue/Saturation window. Click on Colorize, and pick whatever color you want.

Next thing you want to do, is repeat the step with the brushes, and but this time you want to use ONLY either Black and/or White!

Again, repeat the Ctrl+U Step. If you want to choose another color, go for it, but you don't have to.

Now, you want to select the top layer and go to Blending Options >> Stroke. Do a 2px stroke on that image, and use the selector to pick a color from the grungy background.

Now, still selected on the top layer, Do the Ctrl+U again, and colorize the picture to the same color (or as close as possible) to the grungy layer.

Now, click on the bottom layer and grab your text tool. I used the text "Charlie Claire" In Lanie Day Size 24, Faux Bold, Black. Set them both to overlay, and duplicated once. Then merge all the layers. (Ctrl+Shift+E)

One last step...duplicate the merged layer, and go to Edit >> Stroke, and Put a 1px Black Stroke on the image...WALAH! Icon!

Let's see what you guys can do! :)
