Making Brushes?

Hi everyone! I'm new to this community, and to journal making in general. I hope to someday be as good as all of you!

Anyway, could anyone tell me how to make brushes out of image packs? I want to use alot of the brushes that are posted on the 100x100_brushes community but I don't use PS7, I use 6.0. I can't find border brushes for 6.0 and I really like alot of the brushes posted in the community. So can anybody post a tutorial on it for me?

Also, can anybody tell me how to make my text work when I make icons? Whenever I try to type on things the fonts are huge so I can't write anymore than one word. I downloaded a coupleof bitmap fonts that my friend uses on her icons and they work fine, but for me they end up huge. And when I make them smaller you can't read what it says at all. Can anyone help me with this?
