Icon tutorial!

I am bored - thus, a tutorial for this icon:

I'm assuming everyone knows the basics of Photoshopping so I'm skipping the really basic parts. Oh, and I use Photoshop 7.

So, first of all, I got my base image from this post by kryssibug. I cropped it, resized it and sharpened the base once.

I duplicated the base, and tinkered around with the duplicated layer's brightness (image > adjustments > brightness/contrast > brightness to 35) and set the layer to screen, layer opacity 45%.

The layer:

I duplicated the base again, brought the duplicated layer on top of the screened layer and lowered the saturation (image > adjustments > hue/saturation > saturation to -45) and set the layer to soft light, layer opacity 100%.

The layer:

Next, I made a new layer between the screen and soft light layers, set it to exclusion and filled it with #050C3F.

The icon:

Then, I added the following gradients in this order (lowest first):

#B6516D to #9D618C, pin light, 10%
#1E4E62 to #7BA59C, screen, 85%
#BC5638 to #A8ADB9, pin light, 66%

...and ended up with this:

I flattened the image, duplicated it twice and set the new layers to pin light, opacity 30% and pin light, opacity 20%. Using the eraser tool, I replaced the default erasers with a set of grunge brushes (from nocturna.net, I think) and erased parts from both layers, to get the grunge-look (umm, to be more clear, I used the erasers like I'd use brushes - only clicking once).

Here's the ending result:

I still wasn't too happy with the color, so I added the following gradient:

#1D2F20 to #040842, soft light, 50%

This is what the icon looks like now:

One more layer, then we're done, I promise! Just a basic white layer, opacity set to 10% - then I used the eraser tool (the default Photoshop erasers, this time :D) to erase bits from the upper right corner. After that, I made a new layer, added a simple border (1px, #313648) and that's it!

I know this is just a very basic icon, but I hope someone found this helpful and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
