Dumb Newbie Mac User Question

Hi there! Twisty the hopelessly new here!

In anticipation of getting to use Photoshop, I've bought a Mac. I'm trying to back up my old icons and get new ones in the meantime, but I can't figure out how to save images to my computer. Mac Help has been no help at all. Any ideas?
