any incon begginer guides?

Hi, 

I have been lurking, trying and saving icons for a long time now and whenever i try to come up with my own colruing, i just hate it!! 

it either turns out too dull, washed out or boring...the only time it does turn out good (and its because of the base)
how can i improve???

do u have any tips/tricks/ begginers guide for icon making???
