Basic Icon Tutorial - Kristin Kreuk
I'm using the program PSP8 but I'm sure it's translatable into PS.
End result:

First, I start off with this beautiful picture of Kristin Kreuk, found at Zero Consequences.
I crop and resize to a 100x100 icon-sized picture.
(this is snaggable)
Duplicate image and set top layer to hardlight, 100%. Merge down.

Duplicate merged image and set top layer to screen, 100%. Merge down.

Duplicate. With top image selected, go to Adjust > Color Balance > Manual Color Correction. Choose "Stainless" in Metals section. Press ok. Merge down.

Not a big difference, but a little.
Now, I want to change the color of her eyes to a medium-bright blue. Duplicate the image and go to Adjust > Hue & Saturation > Colorize. Choose a Hue of 159, a Saturation 255. Press ok.

Pretty weird, right?
Now, duplicate the "normal" looking layer and bring it to the top. Here's where we get picky. With your eraser tool set at 1 pixel (box size), zoom in on the image (using the scrolling thing on your mouse) and carefully erase the color of the eye. I like her eyes the really bright blue so I'm not going to lower the opacity of the blue image. BTW, I'm a merging freak, so let's merge together! We get this:

Wow, how pretty! Now, using some colors. Create a new raster layer. I chose a color from her face (#FFCA75) and floodfilled the raster layer. I set it to Saturation (Legacy) at 100%. Now, I renamed Kristin Kreuk's layer "kristin" and the floodfilled color to "color". Let's stay organized, here!

I created a new raster layer and floodfilled it with a light pink color (#FFCBE0), also set at Saturation (Legacy) @ 100%. Rename this layer "color" as well.

It's looking very dainty, isn't it? YAY!
We could just stop here, it's a nice basic icon but let's see if we can think up anything more intelligent and elaborate.
Okay, I used this wonderful border by
counterglow (check it out, all the brushes are wonderful!).
I used this brush in a skin-toney color (#E4CDB0). At normal, 100%.

I didn't like how the border was cutting into her face so I erased that part using the eraser tool.

You can either stop here or do one last step, my least favourite: TEXT. I never know where to put it. I have spent long hours just moving text about, trying to find a suitable place to put it. Very frustrating. Anyway, since her eyes have been changed to blue, I decided to stick with a simple and pure word "blue bird". I used Arial Black, pt 6, color black. (#000000). The vector layer is set to Normal @ 76% opacity.

What do you think of this tutorial? Any comments/suggestions? Was anything confusing? Should I continue making tutorials or am I really a lost cause? If you want to snag the icon, please credit me in the keywords.
I've x-posted this to a lot of communities, and my own, so if you see this in a bunch of places, I'm sorry, it's my first tutorial so I need major feedback.
