Path Text Question

I understand how to create a path and make text follow it, but it won't seem to completely work correctly. After the path is created and I begin to attempt to add text there's a problem. At the beginning point of where I can add text shows as a little "x" and at the end it a little "o". The problem is I can't add text past the "o" and the "o" isn't at the end of the path. How can I extend the length of the area where the text can be added?

Checked the FAQ this time and didn't see anything in it about this, sorry if I missed anything.
