Using Brushes and Textures for beginners
A little and easy-to-follow tutorial on using brushes and textures in your graphics like this...
and
Brushes
I used THIS image to start with. It started out at 601 x 480 pixels. So crop it to be 100 x 100. You can colour it if you want. Use my other tutorial HERE to do this if you're unsure!
Here's what mine looks like so far...

To add the brush, in this case I'm using this one...

Simply open it by going to
file > open as layer
To make sure it's the top layer go to
layer > stack > layer to top
Then we can get rid of the white by going to
layer > transparency > colour to alpha
Make sure the colour is white then click OK.
Use the move tool (to get onto it press M or click on it) to move the brush around to where you want it like I've done here...

And there you go!
Textures
To start out get a basic image and crop/resize it to 100 x 100. In this case I just used the same image...

Click on the eraser tool and erase the area around the main object/person. Zoom in to make this easier and using a variety of different brush sizes also helps.
Mine now looks like this...

The checkered boxes behind just show that it's transparent.
Now go to
file > open as layer
And open a texture. I used this one...

Go to
layer > stack > layer to bottom.
And the finished one should look something like this...

And that's it!
You can get textures from many places like...

and

Where you can also get bigger textures and brushes for bigger graphics...
