Larger graphics from screencaps

Can someone direct me to a tutorial or give me tips for making larger graphics (like banners) out of screencaps? Some screencaps aren't quite big enough to be smooth when I crop and resize, so the end effect is a picture that's somewhat grainy and not very high quality, and just not as smooth and crisp as I'd like it to be.
