i hope this is the right place to ask for this kind of thing, but can any one help me with the way text seems to show up?

as you can see, there's a weird, darker and pixelated area around the letters. it looks even worse in photoshop.
it's not a question of anti-alias or the specific font, since i've played around with both of those things. :\
