I have decided to write a quick tutorial since I liked the way this icon came out. Oh and there are some images so slow compies beware.

I started out with this image.
Resized it to 100 by 71. We will make it 100 by 100 later on.
I decided to do a quick recolor. I started by duplicating the base twice. I set the first one to screen and the second to soft light. Then I added a new adjustment layer>hue/saturation/lightness putting the saturation at 35.
Going to image>canvas size making it into 100 by 100. Choose where ever on the image you want it to go. I choose the bottom.
Choose a texture to fill in the white area pasting it over the top. I choose a pretty one by

Using the freehand selection tool cut a jagged edge where you want the two to meet. Invert the selection and cut out the part where Joes face is.
It kinda looks flat so I added a drop shadow to change that.
Now just add text and brushes and there ya go a finished icon.
