Coloring Mood Themes

Sorry if this isn't really supposed to be here, but I was wondering if anyone knows of any good coloring techniques to color really tiny graphics like the mood theme I'm trying to make? Everything I try just seems to overtake the picture and the detail of the pictures. Any help is appreciated. =)
