QuickTime/ImageReady question

Out of curiosity--

A long time ago, someone posted a question about opening .avis in ImageReady. I had thought that QuickTime just didn't play .avis at the time and mentioned that to the person because I've never been able to view .avi movies in QT, much less make animated icons from .avi videos using Quick time. Someone replied to my comment saying that QT could. I never found out how.

All I get is a white screen when I view .avis in QT, therefore, I can't make icons using QT/IR, but it'd certainly make my life easier if I could figure out how to fix this problem because some files are impossible to cap quickly enough to make movie icons like I do.

If you can fix this, can someone tell me how? If I haven't confused you 8D;
