I thought this might be a help. Basically, it's a guide of some do's and dont's when making icons; some tips in there from me as well. It'll also probably help in avoiding to land yourself on the newest post oniconrants . Though it might be old to some, it's very basic icon ettiquette.
Disclaimer: This is not the one and only way to do this. Just some suggestions on how to do some of these things. I do not know everything about icons.
