Tutorial: Outlining Small Fonts

Outlining Small Fonts Tutorial for Paintshop Pro 8
This tutorial will show you how to outline small fonts like this:

Paintshop Pro does have an option for outlining text but often fonts like 04b are too small to look good with that setting. But there are ways to outline text without Paintshop Pro's outline setting.

(This tutorial is for PSP8 but the priciple is the same for other versions of PSP)

Start off with a new blank image. Have the background colour whatever colour you wish the border of the text to be. In this case, I'm using black. Apply the text to your image as usual:

And your image should now look like this:

Now, take out your magic wand tool and click on the background colour, so that all that colour is selected. Your magic wand settings will need to be like this:

Now, go to 'Selection' and 'Invert', so that now all that is selected is the white text. Go to 'Selection' again and choose 'Modify' and then 'Expand'. Make sure that you put '1' in the 'Number of Pixels' box. Actually, you could put '2' if you wanted, but any more than that generally doesn't look good. Now click 'OK'.

Now your image will look like this, with the selection being 1 pixel wider than your text.

Go to 'Edit' and click 'Copy Merged'. Now, open up the icon you would like to apply text to (I'm just using a blank one), and go to 'Edit' and 'Paste as New Selection'.

All finished! I hope this tutorial made sense. If it didn't, ask me about it!
