Listens: Joss Stone - Tell Me 'Bout It

Sketch from photo

Another tutorial, because I am bored and my social life currently resembles that of a tree...

Made in Photoshop CS3 beta, though it's probably translatable, since it only uses gradients, blending modes and a filter.

Get your image. I used a screen cap. from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (episode "Hells Bells", season 6), taken from Screencap Paradise.
Crop it to your liking. I decided to make icons this time, so I cropped it to 100x100 pixels.

Step one. Duplicate your base. Photoshop automatically renames it to 'background copy' layer. Desaturate it. (Shift+Ctrl+U)

Step two. Duplicate the background copy layer.

Step three. Invert the background copy 2 layer. (Ctrl+I)

Step four. Change the Blending Mode of this layer to Color Dodge. You should now hardly see anything on your image.

Step five. Next we'll be applying a Gaussian Blur. Go to Filter - Gaussian Blur and set the radius somewhere between 20 and 25 pixels. Or play around with it until you get the desired look. I used 25 pixels.

Alrighty, we've now got ourselves a black and white pencil sketch. Looks pretty nifty already, but let's see how it looks with a little color to it.

Step six. To add some colors, click your 'background copy' layer and experiment with the opacity until you get the desired look. In these icons, I lowered the opacity till 50%.

We're almost there...

Step seven. Duplicate your base again, desaturate it and set the Blending Mode to Soft Light at 100%. Now merge all your layers.

Step eight. Finally, we're going to slap on a texture/gradient. I used this one:

Unfortunately, I don't know who made this gradient. If anyone knows, please tell me so I can give proper credit.

Set it to Soft Light, 50%. Of course, you can also experiment with other textures/gradients.

All done! You can leave it just like that, or add some text and/or a border. Or whatever else you feel like slapping on there ;)
Comments are always appreciated and I'd love to see your results! Enjoy!
