first tutorial; scrubs
First tutorials, so they might not be any good :P but I was pleased with the results so I figured there was a chance someone else might, too! Nothing too fancy, just some coloring techniques I thought looked nice as I was playing around with making icons.
go from this:
to this:
and this:
to this:
made with PS7, probably translatable (no selective color)
skill level: relatively simple, I think; maybe slight knowledge of photoshop/whatever program you use would be helpful.

So, you start with your image. Crop it and resize to 100x100 pixels, sharpen, etc--basically whatever you usually do to prep your base. I don't know how to do those fancy tables, so the progress images are just below each direction.
Duplicate your based three times.
Set the first duplicate to softlight, and the second and third to screen.
:
>
>
Now to go layer > new adjustment layer > color balance.
midtones: 0, 0, -23
shadows: +14, 0, +53
Preserve is checked.

Now duplicate your base again, drag it to the top, and set it to soft light.

And you're done! From here you can add additional text/brushes/borders/whatever.

This one has more subtle coloring, but I still thought it looked nice; a lot better then the original screencap, anyhow.
Again, start with your image, crop it, resize to 100x100 pixels, do whatever you need to do.
New layer: fill it with #101333. Set it to exclusion.

Layer > new adjustment layer > color balance.
midtones: +21, 0, -56
shadows: -13, +2, +38
highlights: +1, 0, -33
Preserve is checked.

Duplicate your base and drag it to the top, and set it to softlight.

And you're done! From here you can add additional text/brushes/borders/whatever.
Please feel free to experiment with these, as the results will undoubtedly vary with the image. If you try them I'd love to see your results! :>
