The two different colouring effects I want to use in my icons I have seen only in photographs.

The first you can see examples of here and here. It looks desaturated, but it stays so rich that I'm thinking I must need to do something other than desaturate, surely?

The other effect I think is used pretty consistently by otherjoseph; a good example could be found here and also here.

Any ideas, guys?

I've got Photoshop CS & Paint Shop Pro 9, so instructions in either package would be gratefully received.
