Icon Tut: Selective Coloring (Gerard Way)
>>>
Photoshop
Uses Selective Coloring. =)
Probably not translatable...sorry =(
Step #1
This is the basic, resize, crop, sharpen, etc. step.
I threw in a 50% screen layer and a 50% soft light.
Of course depending on your pic you may not want to do that. You may also throw in an extra screen layer here or not. And you can always throw one in at the end if you want. =)
>>>
Step #2
I throw in a new layer of #d6fffe on color burn to help tone down the reds in his face.
I usually don't use a set color just throw the slider over to that area because I don't want it too cyan. You may want to double it if your image has a lot of red/yellow in it.
>>>
Step #3
Now for the selective color. =)
This part really all depends on the image you are using.
For the most part the reds are usually the same.
C: -100
Y: 100
But of course if your image has a lot of those colors you may not want to max out those. Try 50% or 25%.
I do this because when we move to the yellows it looks purple and a purple face is not what we are going for. =)
Next moving on to the yellows!
Which usually ends up quite opposite to the reds.
C: 100
Y: -100
Doing that takes out the yellow in the face which is what we want, but doesn't leave it too unrealistic.
Again you may not want to go full to 100/-100. But usally for the yellows you do. If it looks a little TOO yellow-less another SC layer with a bit of yellow could help. =)
Next comes Neutrals:
Which I don't usually mess with too much. Because it overkills the image with color.
I mainly mess with the cyan to bring that out. I usually start off with 50 or 25. For this particular picture:
C: 50
>>>
Step #4
Okay so I guess you could stop there but I like to make another layer to increase the colors that I adjusted in the last one. Usually this is quite similar to the previous layer so here are the numbers again...
Reds
C: -100
Y: 100
That brought out the lips.
Yellows
C: 100
Y: -100
Took out the yellowness of the skin that adding the extra red did to it.
Neutrals:
C: 25
Y: 15
Added more cyan and added a touch of yellow to make the skin look more natural.
>>>
Step #5
Lastly I duplicate the base and bring it all the way to the top and set it on 10-50% opacity. This pic I used 15. This way it brings some more of that natrualness back to it.
>>>
Step #6
This is all optional. You can add a hue/saturation layer, brush, text, or one of those uber popular scratches texture, and boom your done!
Final Notes
Before starting out, look at the image you are using. If it has some color in it, such as green or blue then by all means go ahead and mess about with those to brigten or dull them.
Here are some more icons that I done that I used that guide with:
Hopefully someone found that helpeful. =)
