Layer Masking

Created in Photoshop 7, after a request in this post.

Achieve this final image:

The original poster asked how to get photos into this type of image:

Step 1 - open the photoframes image. I had to convert it to RGB (Image menu, Mode, RGB) because Photoshop read it as greyscale.

Step 2 - prepare 2 images that you want to display in the photoframes. I applied some textures, desaturated, in general, made them look a bit like older photos (quick and dirty). I resized them and placed them over top the areas of the photoframe where I want them to appear.

Step 3 - turn off visibility for the first 2 layers. Using your Magic Wand, select the black part of the left hand photoframe. You should have your "marching ants" selection now.

Step 4 - Select the layer with your left-hand image, (and turn on its visibility, if it isn't already). Click "add layer mask". It should give you a layer mask with the left-hand part of the photoframe in white, so only that part shows through.

Step 5 - repeat Step 4, but this time, use the RIGHT-hand part of the photoframe, and the RIGHT-hand image layer.

That's pretty much it. You can embellish the rest as you want.

You could cut out all the white background on the photoframe part, and then copy-merged, paste into a a new document to use it as a photo blend, wallpaper, header, etc.
