vibrant/bold colors

does anyone know how i can get the same vibrant, bold color in the icon above? i use photoshop 6. i've tried blending in a peach color gradient and adjusting the opacity of the layers, but the entire icon including the background ends up with this ugly orange tint. if anyone can help me i'd really appreciate it =) thanks guys!
