Photoshop 7.0 Brushes

Hey Everyone. I'm using Photoshope 7.0, and the special effect brushes, the butterfly one. But when I try to do it on the layer, it won't work. How do I make it work? I think it has something to do with the check beside 'Text Only', but that won't uncheck, so...:S Hope someon can help me! :)
