kryssibug tutorial :-P

Dun Dun DUNN! Another Kryssibug Tutorial :) Aren't you excited? :-P

For this, I use Photoshop 7 :)

Let's make -->
This Icon

Step One: Getting the Base Image
Start with the cap of the icon you'd like to use for your picture.

Now, when I made this cap, I obviously had the subtitles on, so when I crop the picture, I have to be very careful not to get any of the words into the icon.

Step Two: Making the Base
Crop the icon into the position you'd like it to be. I use the cropping tool, and I already have it set at the top to 100x100 pixels, and 72 pix/inch resoultion.

My base icon comes out like this:

Eek. Too dark.

Step Three: Contrast and Lightening
Do an Auto Contrast on it, because YIKES. That's one dark icon. (ctrl+shift+L)
There we go, Nice and light. Easy to work with.

Step Four: Sharpening
Ah Yes, My favorite. SHARPENING! :-D Be really REALLY careful not to over sharpen the icon, because then it can look like this:

Which looks like crap. In this instance, I sharpened it twice.

Step Five: Coloring
First thing I want to do here, is duplicate the main image. (Ctrl+J) Set the top layer to Hard Light. Rename that layer Hard Light. Now it looks kind of weird, and kind of dark. Ehh...Not so much.

So, because of how weird that looks, the next thing that I want to do is duplicate the background layer again. Set this layer to Screen. Rename the layer Screen. Set that layer to 50% opacity. Next, go to your background layer, and adjust the brightness. (Image >> Adjustments >> Brightness/Contrast) Set the brightness to 50. And you end up with this.

Next, go between the layer Screen and Hard Light, and create a new layer. Do a flood fill of a color of your choice. In this instance, I chose a pale yellow color. (#F9F3B1)

Set that layer to "Color"

Now, create a new layer on top of the Hard Light layer. Do another flood fill, this time it's an exclusion layer. I always use a dark blue, because it looks better. In this instance, I used #0F053C. This is what you end up with.

I like it, but I think it's too bright for the icon. So we'll do another layer on top if that. Flood fill black. Set to color. Opacity 50%. And we now have this...coloring = complete.

Step Six: Textures and Brushes

Create a new layer on top of the color washing layer, and choose the color white. Do a texture brush. (Brushes used at the end of this step) Set the brush to Overlay. 50% opacity. Now, do the same brush, in Black this time. Set to Overlay. It's enough to tell that it's there, without completely over doing it. You have this now.

Create a new layer. We're going to add some borders now. First, I want a sort of thin-like border brush, with a little texture as well.

Keep it set to Normal and 100% opacity, it looks good like that. It's subtle, but you'd miss it if it weren't there.

Okay, this step can get tricky, so if you have any questions just let me know. What I want you to do is FLATTEN the image. (Layer >> Flatten Image) Now, rotate the image 180 Degrees. (Image >> Rotate Canvas >> 180 Degrees)

Create a new layer and use this brush by __kali__

The brush should be in Black 100% opacity. Looks like this now:

Now, rotate the image back 180 Degrees. (Image >> Rotate Canvas >> 180 Degrees) Now, flatten the image one more time. (Layer >> Flatten Image)

Step Seven: Text
Everyone's favorite. Should be fairly easy for this. Becase we have that nice sized canvas over there to write on. So now, rotate the canvas again this time 90 Degrees CCW. ( Image >> Rotate Canvas >> 90 Degrees CCW)

As far as the text goes, I decided to pick up the pale yellow color from his face, and use that. The color is #EFF4D5. I also decided to use the text that was on the original screen cap, cos it goes well with this icon. "You are not bound by his fate"

Now, when I write the text for "You are not bound to his" I use Ringbearer (The Lord of the Rings Font) size 11. For "Fate" I use English size 24.

Now rotate the image back 90 Degrees CW ( Image >> Rotate Canvas >> 90 Degrees CW)

And the VERY LAST STEP! Wash out even more color :-D

Create a new layer on top of the text layers. Flood fill black. Set to Color. Opacity 50%, and you have your icon. CONGRATS! :-D
