Outlining a figure

This is my first time outlining a figure in an icon like this and it really doesn't look good to me... I'm trying to figure out what I did wrong... I used the lasso tool to outline Westly's face and hand, then used a border tool to enlarge the selection and filled it with orange. Anything you think might help is greatly appreciated, because I don't know what I'm doing! Thanks -Ruby
