My first tut!

This is my first tutorial, so bear with me here. I hope it’s understandable and simple enough for all you icon makers out there. The tutorial is for this Alias icon:

First, I started off with a simple 100x100 base I cropped from an image at Alias-Media.com:

Next, I duplicated the base twice – the very top layer I set to Soft Light, 100% Opacity. The middle layer should be set to Screen, 75% Opacity. Sharpen both of these layers several times, so your image looks like this:

Merge these layers together, so as to avoid layer confusion :-D

Now, create a new raster layer and set it to Exclusion, 100% Opacity and fill it with #013260. On top of that, create another layer, and set it to Multiply, 100% Opacity. Flood it with #C2798F.

Now take the Exclusion layer, duplicate it and set it on top of the Multiply layer. Change the settings to Color (Legacy) at 37% Opacity. This is what it should look like:

To add more darkness and a little more contrast, apply the following gradient on a new layer and set properties to Burn, 25% Opacity:

Still using the same layer, go to Effects --> Texture effects -->Blinds. I love using this on my icons, because not only does it give great texture, but it replaces using fancy brushes and keeps the icon simple. So, while your in the blinds menu, set the Width:: 2, Opacity:: 44, check BOTH boxes (Horizontal / Light from left/top), and the lines should be #CC3963. Control this by pre-selecting the color in your Materials Menu. You should be left with this:

Now, on a new layer, add a simple black border brush. You can find some over at 100x100_brushes

Woo-hoo! Time for text. Start a new vector layer, and using the color #8A5160, write “FALLEN” (Georgia, 5 point bold) and underneath type “ANGEL” (Calisto MT, 6 point bold, 287 kerning). Play around with the positioning of the text until you’re satisfied – and ta-da!
