full icon tutorial -- i used ps6

I'm going from the base and moving on to the finished product.

First start with your base like so:

Duplicate the base twice. So you should have Layer 0, Layer 0 Copy, and Layer 0 Copy 2. Set Layer 0 Copy to Multiply and Layer 0 Copy 2 to Screen. Between Layer 0 Copy and Layer 0 Copy 2 create a new layer. Use the Fill Gradient tool and fill it with a gradient that you choose. I decided to use a pinkish graident that I got from pekeana.

It should look like this:

I don't really like how that turned out. Too liney...so I run a Guassian Blur over that layer set to 7 pixels.

It should look like this:

Next, on top of Layer 0 Copy 2 create another new layer. Do a paintbucket fill. The color I chose to use was a color I picked from the swatches menu on the sidebar.. (#005B7F) It'll fill the picture.

Like so:

Next set the layer to Exclusion

It's a little bit too dark, so I set that layer to 75% opacity.

Time for a little bit of texture. I'm using one of the grid textures that was recently provided on 100x100_brushes. First create a new layer. On the new layer, find your texture and I would suggest doing the color of it black. Once you put it on there, set the layer to overlay, and then play around with the opacity until you get a texture the way you like. For this particular one, I used opacity 5% so that you can just barely see it.

Now it's time for a border brush. Use, yet another new layer. And Pick a color from the picture. I'm using a color that I picked up from his face. (#FEAA98)

All right...Text time! Make sure you know what you want to use. In this case, I'll be using "The Count of Monte Cristo". Create a new text layer and type in your text. I'm using two different fonts. For "The Count of" I use Redensek 6pt. and for "Monte Cristo" I Use LanieDaySH 12pt.

Now set the text layer to Overlay. I also changed the opacity to 50%.

The last thing I did was go back to Layer 0 Copy 2 and put a 2px black stroke on the inside of it to give it a little bit of border.

Ta da! You have an icon!

edit: i didn't notice that you couldn't see the last border. so just scratch that part :-D
