Hugh Laurie icon tutorial
Some friends asked me and found the explanation helpful, so I thought I'd also post it here. My first tut, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate.

This tutorial was made using PSP 7, but it should be translatable to PS. I'm not so sure about Gimp cause I've never used it before. You may have noticed, the base is just 92x92 pixels, but that's alright, we need it that way :-) So let's start:
We'll also need this brush by
77words
Would be best if you would add that brush to your program before starting.
STEP 1: Open you program and open a new image: 100x100 pixels, white (preferably).
STEP 2: Add a new layer and put the brush on it, the color code is #C41010 which is a dark red.
STEP 3: Copy the base and paste it on your soon-to-be icon so there's a one pixel border between the image and the brush.
(It should be looking like this now:
)
STEP 4: Now we'll be working on the coloring of the tie and that handkerchief coming out of his pocket. Duplicate the picture of Hugh and erase (either using the eraser tool or the lasso tool, what you prefer) everything except the tie and the handkerchief.
STEP 5: Now set the blend mode of the "Tie & Hanky" layer to "Hard Light" and duplicate it twice (or - depending on how strong you want the effect to be - more often). Your layer palette should be looking like this now:
and the icon itself like this
STEP 6: Now we'll take the eyes. Duplicate the base again and bring it to the top.
STEP 7: Erase everything but the eyes (like in Step 4) and go to "Colors" and "Colorize".
STEP 8: I've chosen a bright blue for Hugh's eyes, Hue: 157 and Saturation: 230
STEP 9: Set the layer blend mode of the "Eyes"-layer and set it to "Color".
STEP 10: You're finished, even though I did some desaturating after. But it should be looking pretty okay that way too.
Layer palette should be looking like this:
and the icon like this: http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/8390/30zi.jpg
If you want to know how I made Hugh's face a bit more pale, just comment :-)
