Making Checkers
Hoping this is allowed, since it isn't strictly an icon tutorial. If not, tell me and I'll delete!
How to make that nifty checkered print using filters in Photoshop CS.
We're going from

It's fairly straight-forward, actually.
01. Open a new document. For the sake of size, I'll use your standard icon size: 100x100. Make sure your resolution is set to 72.
02. Flood fill your layer with any colour. It doesn't matter as long as it's not black or white.
03. Reset your swatches, like this:
04. Go to filter -> sketch -> halftone pattern...
05. Use the following settings:
That will get you this:
06. To make the boxes bigger, use these settings:
That will get you this:
And you're done! If you want to change the colour of your checkers, repeat step 03, only choose the colours you'd like to use.
