A Beginner's Icon Tut: Small boxes, Visible text, Patterns and Blurs

Hello! Today I shall make my first icon tutorial, showing you how to make something like these:

(Kinda image-heavy, but I'm working off of dial-up so it's not too bad.)

I'm using Paint Shop Pro 9, but it should be very easily translatable.
