PS7 - Gradient Map + Fill

Hi, I have a few questions about PS7. I'm fairly new to PS7, started off with PSP. I was just wondering, what's the difference between Fill and Opacity?

And also, how does a Gradient Map work. I understand that you can apply an actual gradient to a new layer and then play around with the blend modes, but what does a Gradient Map do?
