Vibrant colors, yet again

Okay, I realize there's probably a gazillion vibrant color tutorials to reference to, but I figure since I've got a specific question I'd go ahead and ask it.

I've never been able to find the perfect vibrant color tutorial (I've even asked here a couple of time for icons I've found that I love). Finally, the other day I decided to bite the bullet and ask an icon maker for a tutorial on her icons that were gorgeously colored. She nice enough replied with the tutorial for me right in the comments. I even found out where she got her caps from so I could technically make icons that looked pretty similar to hers.

Anyway, here's the icons she made:

I basically capped the exact same picture using the exact same caps she used:

Then I followed her tutorial:

Layer One: Base
Layer Two: Base set to screen
Layer Three: New Adjustment layer with the saturation up high
Layer Four: Dark dark blue 'exclusion' layer set to 55%
Layer Five: Beige-ish 'multiply' layer set to 40%
Layer Six: Duplication of base, set to soft light 70%

With this effect:

This leads me to believe that maybe I'm doing the saturation wrong? I'm using PSP 7, so I did Layers > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation/Lightness and when that popped up, I upped the saturation pretty high like she said to.

I just don't understand why the icon isn't coming out like hers is all. I can't see how she's getting such awesome results with the base she started out with. o_x; If you can help, that'd be awesome.

Oh, I am familiar with PS, so feel free to give me advice using "PS-lingo" or whatever.
