Full Icon Tutorial for PSP7

Hi, kids!

Today we are going to be making the following icon with PSP7.

First tutorial, so there. It's very long and for dial up people, beware. Kind of graphic heavy.

We start with this image, provided by great_stoneface.

Because I don't know how to do the fancy word link thingies.

Okay, paste it into PSP as a new image. We're going to crop and resize before doing the effects and stuff, because it turns out better that way. Make sure your layer window is open and your tool options window. If not, click on the following icons.

Whee. Now click on the crop tool. In your tool options window, click crop settings. Enter the following settings:

Left: 198
Right: 548
Top: 10
Bottom: 360

Click OK and then crop image. Yay, we have a large base! Now go to Image>>Resize. Select pixel size. Make sure that "resize all layers" and "retain aspect ratio" are checked. Click ok.

Your image should now look like this:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

If not, go back and fix it!

Now we brighten the image. It makes it shiny. Go to Colors>>Adjust>>Brightness/Contrast. Enter the settings:

Brightness: 4
Contrast: 0

Do this twice. Sharpen the image. (Effects>>Sharpen>>Sharpen). Now click on the retouch tool (the little hand thing) and select soften from the menu scrolly thing. Enter the settings:

Size: 7
Hardness: 10
Opacity: 65

This next part takes a bit of patience. Smooth the skin, only the skin. Do it in the direction of the skin. Be careful of shadows and stuff like that. And okay, I gave in and clicked on the lips a few times. Your image should look similar to this:

If it doesn't look exactly like it, that's fine! It doesn't have to be. Now, I like to this on most icons, but you can skip this next step if you wish. Make TWO new layers. Layers>>New raster layer. Leave the settings as is. Click on the airbrush tool. Enter the settings:

Size: 8
Hardness: 6
Opacity: 100

Go to your color palette and select white. Still on your first layer, click on the eyes. Yes, it looks funky. Do the same thing on the second layer, but in blue. I chose #000080. Enter the following settings on your layer palette:

Your image should now look similar to this:

Yay, shiny eyes. It's so perty. Um, anyway. Merge your layers. Layers>>merge>>flatten. Duplicate your image. Layers>>Duplicate. Set the blend mode to SCREEN. Go up to Colors>>Adjust>>Brightness/Contrast. Set the settings to:

Brightness: 0
Contrast: 50

Now create a new layer. Layers>>New raster layer. Set the blend mode to Exclusion. Go to your two color things, the foreground color, background color. Click on the foreground color. That box thing will pop up. Enter #101850. Click OK. Flood fill the exclusion layer. Now duplicate your background. Go up to layers>>Arrange>>Bring to top. Set the blend mode to Soft Light. Merge your layers. Whee, pretty! Your image should look similar to this:

My favorite part! Brushes! YAY! Okay. Click the dropper tool. Select a dark color from within the image. I picked #1E0828. Whee. Create a new layer.

The brushes I'm using are either by quebelly or dtissagirl because their brushes are pretty and I like to use a lot of them. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

On your new layer, use the blinds brush with the color previously selected. Set the blend mode to Soft Light and the opacity to 43. Create another layer. Use the texture brush. Go up to image>>mirror. Click on the move tool to move the brush more in the upper right hand corner. Set the blend mode to Soft Light again, leaving the opacity at 100. Duplicate this layer. Create another layer, and use the border brush. On the border brush layer, go up to colors>>adjust>>gamma correction. Make sure the "Link" box is checked. Set the thingy at 1.10. Click ok. Merge your layers. Your icon should look similar to this:

You can leave it like this if you wish, but I like text. Text can be fun!

Create a new layer. Keep the same layer you used for the brushes. Click on the text tool, and then click anywhere on the image.

The font I used was Casablanca Antique, and can be found at DaFont.com. Anyway, I set the size to 10 and created it as a vector. Type in whatever you want. I chose to do "one day." Click OK. Hover your mouse over the vector selection until you get a rotating arrow. Click and rotate the text however you want. Change the blend mode to Multiply. Then I decided the text was too hard to read, so I changed my active layer to the background and clicked the soften tool. Use the same settings as before, but be careful to soften only underneath the text, so you can read it, but it doesn't look odd. Merge your layers. Save the icon, and you're finished! Finally! Yay! if you actually read through and did this whole thing, I salute you.

At the end, my icon looks like this:

Looking back, I don't really like the border, and I would go change it, but that's me. And if anyone should want it, this icon is up for grabs. Just credit. :D
