Icon Tutorial - PS 7

Man, I am totally the poster child for procrastination. Hmm...science test tomorrow which I have not studied for, hey! Let's make an icon instead and while we're at it, why not make a tutorial on how to make said icon! So if you want to know how I made that, come on in.

I started off with this picture of Eminem. Cropped and resized it so it looks like this:

I thought that looked a bit fuzzy, so I duplicated it and sharpened it. Filter > Sharpen >Sharpen

Then I duplicated the sharpened layer and set it on soft light to give it more contrast.

Tip: If you have a coloured icon I suggest duplicating the base and desaturate it. Image > Adjustment > Desaturate. And then setting the desaturated image on soft light or hard light or anything else you want to try. It gives it this really cool effect, but you may want to turn down the opacity so it doesn't look so harsh.

I created a new layer and flood fill it at 60% with #F4B95B. Set the coloured fill layer to vivid light and lower the opacity to 40%.

It should look something like this:

Then I picked this colour (#462401) off the icon used one of saava's brushes for the border.

Tip: Always, always use brushes on a new layer. It's so much easier to fix if you don't like what you see.

Now at this point, I realized that the icon lacked some texture. So I used these 3 brushes by sweet disease.

Each on their own layer with the same colour I used before and all set on soft light.
The icon looks like this now:

I still thought it needed a little extra something so I used one of the text brushes by crumblingwalls with this colour #CDBE9C.

Set the layer to hard light and opacity to 30%.

Time for some text. I chose 'Words from within' for no particular reason other than the fact that I feel it fits the icon. Words from are in the font 'Times New Roman I' and 'Within' is in the font 'Dear Joe'. Both in the colour from before. I found 'Dear Joe' in dafont.com, TNRI is probably there as well.

This is the icon so far:

As you can tell, you can't read 'Words from' that well. So I use the marquee tool and selected a rectangle around the layer and flooded it with #350B03 at 100%.

See how much difference that made?

Then I added a drop shadow to 'Within' and turned down the fill to about 40% so the text would 'pop'.
That's the final product.

Phew! My first tutorial done. Questions are totally welcome! And please let me know how I did.
