PS7 Tutorial 08: Kyle - Wanting to Stay

Okay, ready? From both polls, both here and at
_thepleiades, this icon and the Charmed wallpaper won.
We're going to start with the icon first since I haven't started on the wallpaper tutorial yet.
1.) Make your base! 100x100, transparent background and drag your cap into the blank space. Auto Contrast (Image - Adjustments - Auto Contrast) and Sharpen (Filter - Sharpen).
2.) Drag the cap all over to find a place you like it at and leave it. Don't cut it to a 100x100 base. Don't do it. Resist!
Duplicate your cap and set it to Screen. Duplicate the Screen Layer
again and desaturate it (Ctrl + Shift + U). DO NOT MERGE
3.) Add
a color adjustment layer. I love working with these layers as much as
the curves. Go to Layer - New Adjustment - Color Balance. Here are the
settings I used:
Shadows: -12, +11, +16
Midtones: +7, +6, -29
Highlights: +7, -4, +13
4.) This
step is optional. I loved the color balance layer in there, but I
wanted a bit more enchancement to the whole presentation so I added a
Lighten Layer with #020129. Now you can merge the layers - except the
Color Balance Layer. Leave that one alone.
5.) Next - Add your texture.
Lay this on the bottom of your cap and color balance layer. Select
about half of your cap and cut it away. The texture needs to be under
the cap and not cut anywhere.
6.) Add a boxy brush. Place it on a new layer over the blank space where the texture is.
7.) Duplicate your cap and size it down to fit inside the boxy brush. Sharpen it once and desaturate it.
8.) Add a pattern on top of it. I love the luminary effect on icons and this pattern goes on most of them. Set it to Soft Light.
9.) Now, your text. I added want to stay, because Kerr should come back to Charmed
and steal Paige away from Henry - now! I'm a hardcore Investigator
shipper and although, I like Henry and Ivan Sergei is great - I want
Kyle back. Okay, end rant, back to tutorial: Dig out the Character
palatte on the tool bar and squish the spacing together. For this icon
I set it at -170, size 24 pt. Font is Thryromanes.
And viola! Look - handsome but sad Kyle, whom I love:
