Changing the background colour

I have looked through the memories and couldn't find anything to help me and I use PSPX.

My question is: Is there a relatively easy way to change the background colour of icons? For example if you use an image from a photoshoot and the background is say black, is there an easy way for me to change it to say white or another colour please?
