Rectangular Marquee Tool - PS7

I'm having some trouble with the Rectangular Marquee tool in PS7. I use it very frequently and have never had a problem with it, until now. The first time I crop it works fine, but if I decide I don't like that crop I just click outside of the selected area and usually it disappears, but now it won't. I try and re-crop and it just crops again, without deleting the other crop. And this is probably making no sense, so here's some caps: what my photoshop looks like now, with all the strange crops, and what my cursor looks like *after* I crop. Normally, it doesn't have the extra little + sign at the bottom right corner.

EDIT: After tinkering around a bit, I found out the (rather obvious) solution. In case anyone else has a problem like this, here's the answer.
