Question about GIMP

I used to use a friend's Photoshop almost all the time until I got a new computer. Now I can't access Photoshop at all and I'm considering downloading the GIMP.
Could anyone give me some information about how it compares to Photoshop, or some tips and useful sites for resources and tutorials?
If this isn't allowed, I'll happily delete this post.
