'tangled up in blue' - kiefer sutherland icon tutorial
Just a simple technique that I liked and decided to share while I'm in the midst of making 100 Kiefer icons. Five steps, four layers total!
This was done in PSP9, and I don't have Photoshop, so I'm not sure how transferable it is. It's a real cut too.
Go from this picture to
.
So we have our image.
Crop and resize to 100x100 pixels.

Unsharp mask.
Adjust > Sharpness > Unsharp Mask
[Settings: Radius=1, Strength=47, Clipping=0]

Clarify.
Adjust > Brightness and Constrast > Clarify
[Settings: Strength=1]

Add a light effect.
Copy image, paste as a new layer.
[Settings: Hard Light @ 100% opacity, by
awmpdotnet]

Add some text. (If you want.)
Text tool. Vector layer #1
"tangled up in"
[Font: Dear Joe, size 12]
Text tool. Vector layer #2
"blue"
[Font: Dear Joe, size 26]

And there you have it!
For note, the final order of the layers, top to bottom, is:
The light effect (which is a raster layer)
Vector layer #2
Vector layer #1
Your original base layer
Please don't copy this straight out and make dozens of icons from it, experimenting is fun! There's a whole bunch of similar light effects at this post and others at
awmpdotnet. If you want to use the icon, go ahead, just credit
