Original tutorial by ruined_prodigy - HERE.

I'm using this icon base of Jessica Simpson during this tutorial - base is cropped from an original which can be found at SweetKisses[dot]Net. These methods can also be used on larger images when you want to use them in blends and collages.

1. Open your chosen image into Photoshop and Auto Level the image - Image >> Adjustments >> Auto Levels

2. Sharpen the image once - Filter >> Sharpen >> Sharpen

3. Select the blur tool from the tools palette as shown below:

4. With the same settings as mine in the image above carefully brush over Jessica's skin with the blur tool. Take care around the eyes, nose, lips and hair-line as not to blur them too much. Don't take too much time on this as it's only a small picture - just a few light touches will do the trick. TIP: It helps if you zoom in to over 400%.

5. In this example I also chose to blur the entire background on which she was placed. You can increase the size of the brush, but take care not to blur too much.

6. Now the base is prepared, duplicate the image three times - your layer palette should look like this:

7. Set the blending modes of the layers in the following way:

layer 1 - screen, 50% opacity
layer 2 - soft light, 100% opacity
layer 3 - overlay, 100% opacity

8. Desaturate layer 3 - Layer >> Adjustments >>Desaturate

9. Flatten the image- Layer >> Flatten Image

10. Using the scrolling marquee tool, (HERE), select part of the image - I chose Jessica's face and body:

11. Copy your selection.

12. You can choose to unflatten the image now, or leave it together - it makes no difference.

13. Paste your selection onto your image and move it to the far right hand side:

14. Load a smaller selection similar in size as I have in the example:

15. Copy your selection and then paste onto your image.

16. Move this new part towards the right hand side of the image near to the first part you pasted in - keep it centered if you can:

17. Paste the same part twice more and place one above and one below the previous part:

18. Your layer palette might look like this:

19. Add 2px white borders around layers 1, 2, 3 and 4. To do this load the selection by pressing Ctrl on your keyboard and clicking the mouse on the layer in the layer palette. It should highlight with a scrolling marquee.

20. To add the border once it's selected go to Edit >> Stroke and using the following options:

21. The original image of Jessica isn't showing very well - I've ended up covering it and we actually need to see it. If you have all your layers merged like mine then move it slightly to the left to reveal Jessica's face. If your layers are still separated then link them before moving them.

22. Once I'd moved the background image a little, this is what I got:

23. All that's left is a 2px white border and some text:
