Sufjan Stevens Icon tutorial! (Photoshop)

We will be going from this to this:
.

This will be done in a few simple steps. No silly textures or millions of brushes.

First of all, let's open our image in Photoshop. You'll notice that it is very big. Go to IMAGE >> IMAGE SIZE and change it to a smaller size (I decided on 500x684). Next, use the rectangular marquee tool to select an area of the image that you like. Go to IMAGE >> CROP. You might then notice that your image is not a perfect square. Not to worry! Go to IMAGE >> CANVAS SIZE, and make it a perfect one! Next, resize it to 100x100. Go to FILTER >> SHARPEN.

You'll have something that looks like this:

Our next step is to go to LAYER >> NEW FILL LAYER >> SOLID COLOUR. As for colour choice, I went with #DBDC83. Set this layer to LINEAR BURN. Your image should look like this:

Next! Use your rectangular marquee tool to select a small square. Flood fill this layer with #898A16 by clicking and choosing SOLID COLOUR. Duplicate this layer twice (so you have three little squares), and nudge them until they are where you want them.

ALMOST DONE! Adjust the transparency on your squares so they gradually fade. In our example, the first box is at 100%, the second at 66%, and the third at 33%.

Finally! Use your favourite border brush to create a border around the icon (I used a brush by bessieboo). You should have something similar to this:

YAY! You're done! *happy dance*
